Euskalduna Bilbao is once again hosting the concert and awards ceremony of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards, now in its XVII edition. These international awards recognise science and culture of excellence on a global scale, reflected in theoretical advances, models and fundamental perspectives for understanding the natural, social and technological world, as well as in applied innovations and developments, in addition to the creation of artistic and interpretative works and styles of contemporary classical music and opera.
Its eight categories showcase the hallmarks of 21st century scientific research and artistic creation. In its architecture, basic knowledge plays a major role, and in addition to physics, chemistry and mathematics, it includes more recent areas such as information and communication technologies. Particular attention is also given to advances in the knowledge of the natural environment that sustains life in all its manifestations, through a category dedicated to Climate Change and Environmental Sciences.
The interdisciplinary nature of knowledge today is evident in the categories of Biology and Biomedicine and Economics, Finance and Business Management. For the past five years, contributions of broad impact have also been recognised in two other fields that are essential for successfully tackling the major challenges of our time: the humanities and social sciences. In addition, the vast universe of cultural creation is represented by one of the most innovative areas: music and opera.
